I've always been interested in the idea "to play or not to play" that goes on before major championships.
Tiger Woods, who, shockingly, will not be attending the Shell Houston Open, has always "rested" the week before a major, taking the time to prepare for the course the biggie will be played on.
Phil Mickelson, who is playing, has approached majors the same way I feel like most would - by playing in a competitive atmosphere the week before to prepare himself mentally.
I know, I know, the Shell Houston Open isn't going to be some sort of a concentration epiphany to Tiger, but I think playing keeps you in a routine that rolls over to the next week.
The winner of the Shell Houston is automatically throw in the Masters field, which would be helpful to Davis Love III, who has played in EVER major since the 1990 U.S. Open. That is a pretty impressive streak, but Davis will need to win the entire shabazz to qualify for next week in Augusta. Seeing as Davis has won once in the last five seasons, I'd say the Vegas odds are against him.
Starting tomorrow, the Shell Houston Open will play as a fluffer to anyone that cares about golf, getting you just excited enough for a week of the best golf of the year.
