If you want, go ahead and add "wire-to-wire" to Johnson Wagner's extensive vocabulary.
The Virgina Tech-ian won the Shell Houston Open from the start to the finish this weekend, notching a place in the Masters field and hoping to make his first cut in a major championship.
Wagner made only six bogeys all week, three coming in the final round, as he held off magenta-hot (hotter than red-hot) Geoff Ogilvy for his first PGA Tour victory and only his third career top-10 on the Big Boys Tour.
Some notes from this weekend -
-Defending champion of the Shell, Adam Scott, shot a 63 to open at the top of the leader board, but decided his time would be better spent practicing at Augusta, so he withdrew after his second round 76. I bet the Shell people LOVE that stuff.
-Phil Mickelson finished in a tie for 23rd yesterday. In both his Masters wins, Schmickey finished in the top-10 the week before Augusta. I'm just saying is all....
-Fred Couples finished in a tie for fourth, his first top-five since the '06 Masters. Also note, Fred Couples is cool as hell.
-John Daly is continuing his impressive 2008 campaign on tour. Daly withdrew after opening with a 78 and a second round that started par-bogey-birdie-bogey-bogey-birdie-double-I'm outta here. Daly walked after the double, making this his second WD of the season and his sixth tournament of the year that he didn't cash a paycheck. Daly now has 15 rounds of 73 or higher this season and only nine that were 72 or below. I would say something like, "This looks like the end of an era" if Daly wasn't such a dumb shit.
-Davis Love III will officially miss his first major championship since the 1990 U.S. Open after failing to win this weekend in Houston.
