Birdies, birdies, birdies, birdies. That is the pleasure this Thursday at St. Andrews. Normally a week where birdie is a good score, but par is fine as well, if you get around the Old Course during the first round without finding yourself well into the 60s, you won't be sniffing the leaders.
As you now know, Rory McIlroy tied the lowest round in major championship history with a 9-under 63, exclaimed by a birdie on the final hole. While I will be the first to tell you that St. Andrews is my favorite golf course in the world, if there isn't any wind, it is easy, and that's coming from a guy that couldn't hold any of these player's jocks at this sport.
Tiger Woods got off on Thursday with a 5-under 67, in perfect position for Tiger, who has started so slow of late at majors that he could never get it going the last 54 holes. Tiger's previous two wins at St. Andrews started off with a 67 and a 66, so he's right in position and looked solid on Thursday.
Then you have a list of other players. John Daly, Louis Oosthuizen, Lucas Glover, Nick Watney. A few names have found the leaderboard that you have surely never heard of, and a few more that you expected to be there.
The deal this week is simple ... when the wind is calm, you better take advantage, because at any time it could get rough, and the Old Lady will finally show her teeth.
