Is Geoff Ogilvy The Best Player in the World Right Now?

Think back to 2006. Phil Mickelson was playing the best golf in the world, coming off a Masters victory (his second) and trying to shake his U.S. Open monkey directly off his back (three seconds up to that point).

You know how that story ended. Mickelson was at Winged Foot but decided to hit driver off the tee even though he needed par to win, bogey to tie. The driver sailed left and if you thought he had lost his mind with the driver, he actually one-upped himself by trying to his some punch-cut iron shot from U.S. Open rough to try and find the putting service because apparently Bones doesn't have a voice box. The winner that day was Geoff Ogilvy. He played himself to the top of the leaderboard and Phil's antics allowed him to capture his first major championship.

Since then Geoff has seemed to be in the hunt more than not. He went three straight years at the PGA Championship with top-10 finishes. He was t-9 last year at Torrey Pines. He won an Accenture Match Play and finished runner-up the year after. Now, he seems to be on the top of his game yet again, winning the Mercedes Championship this year and finding himself in a prime spot to win his second of five tournaments this year.

It seems when Geoff gets hot, he is nearly unstoppable, and that degree seems to be now. I'm not saying he is the hottest golfer on the planet, but who rivals him? Padraig Harrington? The guy hasn't done anything in '09. Tiger Woods? He hasn't seen a weekend since June. Anthony Kim? He might be suffering from "sophomore slump for winners."

I think Ogilvy takes this today, and if so, I'd look out for him at Augusta. A guy that can roll the rock this well will always have a leg up on those nasty greens.
