Vegas Makes Me Laugh

On Friday (not Thursday), the Deutsche Bank Championship kicks off at TPC Boston. It's an event that will host the second leg of the FedEx Cup, with some of the best golfers in the world participating.

So, who do you think the favorite is in Las Vegas? Is it Matt Kuchar, the winner of last week and a top-10 machine this season? Could it be Steve Stricker, a two-time champion in 2010 who might just put some room between him and the rest of the PGA Tour for Player of the Year with a third win this week? What about Phil Mickelson, the Masters winner this year that has been chasing that title of world number one for most of the latter part of this year?

Nope, it's the guy that hasn't won a PGA Tour event in a year. Yep, Tiger Woods!!!

Tiger is a 7-to-1 favorite at the Deutsche Bank, an event Woods won back in 2006 and finished t-11 last season, his only finish out of the top-two in his last eight PGA Tour events in '09.

I know Vegas does these things because people will see his name, see the odds ("Dude, if Tiger wins I can turn this $100 into $700!!!") and make the idiotic bet, because Vegas is smarter than we are, but if you are seriously putting money on this guy to win when he can't seem to string four good rounds together to save his life, you really don't like money.

But, alas, he will win eventually, so if he does, maybe I'll be the one eating my words, eh?

It's nice to hear people talking about Tiger Woods in terms of golf and not his marriage. If you're in the area, there's a golf event coming up on 9/21 at Ramblewood Country Club in NJ- Jon Runyan's Score for the Cure.

I'm not sure Tiger has to string four good rounds together to win. He played one good round at the US Open and finished 4th. 1 1/2 good rounds last weekend got him 12th. I'd say 2, 2 1/2 solid rounds and he could definitely win.

Even at 50-60 percent or whatever he is right now he's still a better bet than anybody else. Especially on a course where he's already won.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you. He needs four rounds of good golf to have a chance, because the guys are too good now and aren't intimidated by him. Also, you can't really say he had half a good golf round. It's measured in 18 holes. That's like saying a pitcher was solid for four innings. Yeah, but he still got shelled the last five.

Perhaps four rounds of not terrible golf.

If he plays four round of good (by his standards) golf he'll win by 8 strokes. As it stands I'll be stunned if he doesn't finish in the top-10.

It certainly looked last weekend like he was putting it together. I think Phil is going to look back on this year as a missed opportunity in his career.

There was a time (circa 2000) when Tiger could show up, have a mediocre week and lift the trophy at the end. Those days are gone. This is due to a combination of stronger competition and a weaker Tiger. Even before the affairs, injuries and his new horrible golf swing, Tiger's game was slipping. He was still the best, but he wasn't the Tiger we saw for 2 of 3 years in the early part of this decade (boy that sounds like a long time ago). That wasn't the norm, it was an anomaly. It was a great player playing out of his mind.

Shane is right, Tiger needs 4 good rounds of golf now to win for all the above reasons.

However, having said that. I have this feeling like he will win this week... but I'm not prepared to bet on it in Vegas.
